IP landscapes: quick insight into patent information

When you are developing a new product or service, it is good to have insight into the activities of competitors. Should competitors' patents get in your way, you want to know as early as possible. That way, you can make strategic choices during the development phase and adjust the project if necessary.

Creating an intellectual property (IP) landscape can then help. By literally mapping relevant IP activities, it is possible to see at a glance where competitors are focusing, and where opportunities exist in the marketplace. The possibilities are basically endless. For example, it can be investigated which companies are active in certain fields, which technologies are applied in which field, and whether there is much cross-fertilization between fields. But also whether few patents have been applied for in an interesting field and what the developments are over time.

From information to overview

Once it is clear where the focus lies, the patent information specialist thoroughly searches databases of patent literature. In this way, large numbers of patents and patent applications can be found. This information is clustered so that it can be presented in one picture or chart. For example, you can create a picture with certain ‘islands’ of technologies. Here you can immediately see if, for example, there is an area between the islets where there is little commercial activity. This could be a gap in the market.

Of course, it is also possible to zoom in further on the search results and view individual competitors or patents. An IP landscape gives you a wealth of information!

Artificial Intelligence

Meanwhile, artificial intelligence (AI) is also being used to search the patent literature. It is possible to create IP landscapes with AI, although this is still in its infancy. It goes without saying that V.O. is closely following these developments so that we can make the best use of them.
